The primary purpose of the school library and this course is to provide students with the essential skills to be effective users of ideas and information in all its many forms.
Readings, instructional and graded assignments will familiarize students with library organization and its various resources, including print and Internet research. Students will learn effective approaches to tackling a broad array of research-oriented tasks, whatever the subject or discipline.
This course will provide students with knowledge and skill development in library procedures and techniques. You will receive training in many facets of library operations, which includes traditional and computer-based library-specific skills. You will learn how to navigate the library easily, and with confidence. You will learn the system of shelving, book classifications, call numbers, Internet search tools, the Destiny system, information searching, Boolean operators, reference tools, finding information in periodicals, analyzing information sources, evaluating Internet information sources, library patron servicing and all the other important components to library efficiency. You will also learn technology relating to information.
A major component of this course is an opportunity to actually work in the library and thus apply theory to practice. The work experience component will provide students with much experience and transferable skills in their future work endeavours.
